While the ongoing implosion of crude oil prices has put high-profile names like Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) and Linn Energy LLC (NASDAQ:LINE) in the limelight - and the hot seat - all the noise surrounding those and other names may have distracted investors from looking at the oil rout in an opportunistic light rather than through the panic-colored glasses that have proven so damaging to the likes of LINE and CHK. Rather than fret over how difficult life was going to be for Linn Energy, Chesapeake Energy, and all their peers now that the price of oil was at or below the cost of drilling for it, investors should have been looking at companies that make drilling for oil cheaper and more cost-effective. As this deal clearly demonstrates, when the right deal comes along it can add significant income accretion to unit holders of oil and gas MLPs. We've seen several instances of this in the sector this year with LINN Energy's (NASDAQ: LINE  ) announced acquisition of Berry Petroleum for $4.3 billion adding in excess of $0.40 per unit to its distributable cash flow. That deal is the driving force behind LINN's announced 6.2% distribution increase, which will go into effect when the deal closes next quarter.

We got numerous questions about Linn Energy (Nasdaq: LINE) in the chat. I commented on this in last week’s MLP Investing Insider, but it bears repeating here as there is obviously still a lot of interest. Igor’s answer to this question was “I expect the merger to close by year’s end, but I think Linn has some structural issues that go beyond [pending merger partner Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY)] with its debt load and past acquisition quality, so I’m steering clear. There are better upstream MLPs in our portfolios.”

Investors in LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) have been rattled lately as bears have been bashing the company's units. To top it off, those units were hit again last week as rumors began to surface that the complex deal with its affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) to buyBerry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY  ) was being delayed. The big concern is that the deal might fall apart, which would be a major blow to the company.

Qilai Shen, Bloomberg via Getty ImagesGM Global Product Development Chief and soon-to-be CEO Mary Barra. DETROIT -- Kettering University President Robert McMahan was traveling in China a few months ago when he bumped into one of the university's board members at an airport in Shanghai. Mary Barra, the busy global product development chief at General Motors Co. (GM), might have just said hello and turned back to her phone. Instead, she had a long discussion with McMahan's teenage son about his education and his efforts to learn Mandarin. "I turned to my son after she left and said, 'I put a month's pay on the fact that you just met the next president and CEO of GM,'" McMahan said. "Even he, as a 16-year-old, was impressed by her approachability." McMahan can keep his pay. On Tuesday, GM's board named Barra, a 33-year company veteran, as its next CEO, making her the first woman to lead a major car company. Barra replaces Dan Akerson, who moved up retirement plans by several months to help his wife, Karin, battle advanced cancer. When Barra starts her new job Jan. 15, she will lead a company that's made nearly $20 billion since emerging from bankruptcy in 2010, much of it from the cars and trucks she helped develop. But she still faces challenges of paring down GM's costs and winning over buyers in international markets such as India and South America. Akerson, 65, said he had planned to stay at least until spring, but his wife's diagnosis changed that. He said the board unanimously picked Barra from several internal candidates because of the breadth of her experience, her management record, her people skills and her understanding of GM's operations. "This is an executive who has a vision of where she wants to take the organization," he said. Since February 2011, Barra has held what many say is the most important job at GM. She joined the company in 1980 as an engineering student at Kettering -- then known as General Motors Institute -- and became a pla
