Hot Tech Stocks To Own Right Now

Our top stock selection for 2014 has received three Breakthrough Therapy Designations (BTD) by the FDA, and subsequent approval, in November, for Imbruvica, a very safe pill that has shown unprecedented efficacy to treat mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), suggests John McCamant, editor of The Medical Technology Stock Letter.

The companyhich we consider conservative among biotech stockss Pharmacyclics (PCYC). Its pill is also expected to be approved for a much larger B-cell cancer market, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), by the end of February.

The next catalyst for PCYC will be the release of data, at the end of January, from the RESONATE trial, the first Phase III study of Imbruvica in patients with refractory/relapsed CLL. RESONATE should continue to demonstrate Imbruvica's incredible efficacy and safety as a once-a-day cancer pill.

With the drug already on the market for MCL, we expect CLL sales to ramp up rapidly, as there is a large pool of CLL patients that have been watching and waiting for a safe and effective treatment for CLL.

Silicon Graphics International (SGI) develops, markets and sells various servers, enterprise-class storage hardware, differentiating software and solutions. This stock closed up 3.3% to $9.36 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $9.07-$9.47

    52-Week Range: $8.16-$16.60

    Thursday's Volume: 179,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 270,564

From a technical perspective, SGI bounced notably higher here right above some near-term support at $9 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock has been making higher lows over the last two months, and this stock is now starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if SGI manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at its 50-day moving average of $9.58 to some more near-term overhead resistance levels at $9.65 to $10.23 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SGI as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $9 or at $8.86 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 270,564 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SGI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $10.83 to its gap-down-day high of $11 from May. Any high-volume move above $11 will then give SGI a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone that started near $12.50.

Paul Sakuma/AP There were plenty of winners and losers this week, with a few potential mergers coming undone and a maker of electronic learning toys getting schooled. Here's a rundown of the week's smartest moves and biggest blunders. Trex (TREX) -- Winner It's summer, and apparently a lot of homeowners decided to invest in sprucing up their outdoor living space. Trex posted strong quarterly results on Monday. The leading maker of weather-resistant wood-alternative decking saw its sales climb 23 percent, and adjusted pre-tax earnings soared 62 percent. There was some weakness earlier this earnings season out of other home improvement specialists, so it's a welcome surprise to see Trex holding up so well. The good news doesn't end there. Trex is eyeing accelerating growth, calling for revenue to climb a better than expected 27 percent in the current quarter. Mergers -- Loser In any week there seems to be a couple of acquisitions or mergers, but sometimes Cupid isn't feeling up to the arrow-slinging task. A couple of big potential buyouts came undone this week when Rupert Murdoch pulled his offer to buy out Time Warner (TWX), and Sprint (S) nixed plans to snap up T-Mobile (TMUS). The deals fell apart for different reasons. Murdoch just didn't have an interest in chasing Time Warner's stock higher in a hostile buyout bid. Sprint realized that regulators weren't going to be happy unless there were four major independent wireless carriers out there. Instant Gratification -- Winner Amazon.com (AMZN) announced on Wednesday that it was expanding its same-day delivery service to six more cities. Prime shoppers in Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, metro areas will now be able to place an order on the website by noon and pay $5.99 to have it delivered that same day. Naturally the selection is limited to items that Amazon stocks locally, but the one knock on Amazon about having to wait a day or two at least for shipme

Whole FoodsMarket (NASDAQ: WFM  ) --"America's healthiest grocery store"
The team at Whole Foods has long made clear their mission, which includes holding to a central list of core valuesthey describe as the steady "underpinning of our company culture." Among the items on that list are "selling the highest quality natural and organic products available," "satisfying and delighting our customers," "supporting team member excellence and happiness," "caring about our communities and our environment," and "creating wealth through profits and growth."

Of course, many investors are most excited about that last item, and Whole Foods has certainly delivered on that promise by helping early shareholders return more than 36 times their initial investment over the past 20 years. Even so, I think Whole Foods has plenty of growth left, so I put my money where my mouth is andbought Whole Foods stock for the first time last month. LeapFrog (NYSE: LF  ) --"We put learning first -- a philosophy that distinguishes us from our competitors and fuels the entire company."
Anyone who has kids knows how effective LeapFrog's products can be. In fact, my own children frequently request LeapFrog's educational programs on Netflix. Even better, our 2-year-old surprised us earlier this year by recognizing and saying the name of every letter in the alphabet as I randomly pointed them out -- something we had worked on a little, but with which I'm sure LeapFrog lent its helping hand.

If that weren't enough, the company also managed to beat first-quarter earnings estimates earlier this month, isgenerating tons of cash, and looks cheap, as it currently trades for just 13 times next year's estimated earnings.

Advisors' Opinion:

But it doesn’t end there. Investors should run away from all OTC marijuana stocks, including Medical Marijuana (MJNA), Cannabis Science (CBIS), CannaVest (CANV), MediSwipe (MWIP) and GreenGro Technologies (GRNH). As the SEC warns:

  • [By Dan Burrows]

MediSwipe (MWIP) has tripled, with MWIP stock up 200%. Cannabis Science (CBIS) is closing in on quadrupling, as CBIS stock gained 273%. And GreenGro Technologies (GRNH)? Brace yourself, because GRNH stock is up over 1,000% … including an 18% so far today.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

There's no denying it. Marijuana stocks like Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS), Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), and Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA) have gotten their second wind (and some would argue their third wind) over the past few days, doling out big gains in a very short period of time. MJNA is up 88% over the past four trading days, counting today. PHOT has popped 44% during that timeframe. CBIS has advanced 91% in just six days. It's everything a devoted shareholder of any of these companies could hope for, and more.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Much like Nuvilex, Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS) appears to simply be another conventional biotech outfit. And, truth be told, that's what CBIS is. It just happens to be developing two drugs based on cannabinoids... one to reat HIV/AIDS, and the other to treat cancer. Both drugs are in preclinical trials right now, so an actual marketable product is still years down the road for Cannabis Science Inc. But, as a legitimate biotechnology that isn't aiming to simply fuel tokers' needs, it's not going to hit any regulatory or law-enforcement roadblocks.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Intevac (IVAC) provides process manufacturing equipment solutions to the hard disk drive industry and high-productivity process manufacturing equipment and inspection solutions to the photovoltaic industry. This stock closed up 8.5% to $6.74 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $6.23-$6.75

    52-Week Range: $4.06-$6.80

    Tuesday's Volume: 263,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 140,032

From a technical perspective, IVAC soared higher here right off some near-term support at $6.25 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last three months, with shares moving higher from its low of $4.31 to its recent high of $6.80. During that move, shares of IVAC have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of IVAC within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if IVAC manages to take out its 52-week high at $6.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in IVAC as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $6.25 or at $5.92 and then once it sustains a move or close above its 52-week high at $6.80 with volume that hits near or above 140,032 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then IVAC will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at $8 to $8.37. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $9 to $9.36 within range for shares of IVAC.
