Top Defensive Stocks To Buy Right Now

There are certain investment-related quotes that appear when markets are at extreme levels. For instance, the classic "buy when blood is running in the streets" (Rockefeller) is a useful reminder that a vast proportion of profit is made when shares are bought (at a very low price) rather than when they are sold. Similarly, Warren Buffett's quote "you only find out who's swimming naked when the tide goes out" is a useful reminder that taking high levels of risk at the wrong time can be very costly.

So, with the S&P 500 still within touching distance of its all-time highs and the Federal Reserve beginning the tapering of its monthly asset repurchase program, could now be a good time take some risk off the table and instead reallocate capital to lower beta, higher yielding, defensive plays?

Tobacco Stocks Could Add Value
Tobacco stocksbenefit from fairly stable demand for their products. Whether the US and global economy is in a boom or a recession, people still smoke, with a switch to a lower/higher price point brand (depending on the state of the economy) more likely than giving up the habit as a result of less disposable income. Due to this, tobacco companies tend to offer lower betas and a more secure dividend payment than many of their index peers. Both of these attributes could prove vital during a market correction or bear market.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

Today's best performer was ratings agency Moody's (NYSE: MCO  ) , which surged 8.3% after it and McGraw-Hill (NYSE: MHFI  ) subsidiary Standard & Poor's settled a lawsuit with slightly more than a dozen plantiffs in a case involving their rating of financial securities relating to the financial crisis. Although no financial figures were disclosed, settlements in cases like this are extremely common and usually for less than the sought-after amount, since court fees can be quite expensive. This could also bode well for future and ongoing litigation such as the U.S. government's suit against McGraw-Hill's Standard & Poor's for its selected ratings during the financial crisis.

Alamy For years -- ever since the Great Recession ended -- pundits have been pontificating about a strange trend in corporate America. Despite earning record profits, and having the ability to borrow cash easily, companies were refusing to spend. Like Scrooge in his office, they were raking in profits ... and then sitting on them, refusing to put the money to work to grow the American economy. Or so the story went. But was it true? it true? It turns out that this real story is a bit more complicated; and you'll be surprised where a lot of that cash came from ... and what it needs to be spent on. A Kernel of Truth Every complex tale grows from a kernel of truth, of course, and this one actually grows out of two such kernels. It's true that American corporations are fabulously profitable today. According to the Department of Commerce, profit margins at U.S. companies in 2013 were regularly hitting levels of 9.3 percentage points -- more than 57 percent higher than average over the past 60 years. Also true is that these profits, in turn, yielded a lot of cash for the corporations earning them. From 2006 through mid-2013, total cash reserves at U.S. nonfinancial companies (i.e., everything but banks) nearly doubled, rising from $820 billion to $1.48 trillion, an 81 percent increase. Credit ratings company Moody's (MCO) recently estimated that cash levels at the end of 2013 probably hit $1.5 trillion.

In terms of growth, Asia is where the company is achieving its greatest success. Operating joint ventures in China, India and Japan, Aegon’s gross deposits in new markets grew 31% in fiscal 2013 to $19.8 billion. Its underlying earnings before tax have grown 28% over the last two fiscal years, with fee-based earnings representing a much bigger part of its business than in the past. That's a good thing, because fee-based earnings don't have nearly the same bite if things go south than assets on your own balance sheet. Its operations outside of Europe are getting stronger, providing the diversification necessary to survive financial hiccups. As far as insurers go, AEG is one of the best cheap stocks worth owning.

Cheap Stocks to Buy: Cencosud S.A. (CNCO)

Cencosud is one of the largest retailers in Latin America. It operates grocery stores, home improvement stores and department stores in five countries including Chile, its home base. Its stock is down 51% over the past year for several reasons, including a ! deal falling through that would have seen it sell 51% of its credit card operations in Chile and Argentina to Itau Unibanco (ITUB) and using the proceeds to reduce its heavy debt load. Add to that a major devaluation of the peso in Argentina, where it generates a quarter of its overall revenue, and you have investors in a full-on panic.

Video Finding Value in More Economically Sensitive Sectors - Royce Funds Commentary

Portfolio Manager Lauren Romeo talks about where she's been finding the most attractive valuations, positioning our portfolios to benefit from a more historically typical recovery, and the portfolio characteristics of Royce 100 Fund, which she manages with Chuck Royce.

See the video here.

"Royce 100 Fund is unique given that it has a particular focus on franchise or high-quality businesses, as well as the fact that it's relatively concentrated with a maximum number of 100 names in the portfolio.

Additionally, while Royce 100 Fund is at its core a small-cap fund, it does have a little bit of a broader fishing pond relative to other Royce quality-focused funds. Royce 100 Fund can invest in companies with market capitalizations up to $5 billion, which means not only can we take advantage of opportunities that may arise in the low end of the mid-cap market but also invest in micro-cap companies, which is a less efficient but very attractive part of the market that Royce has been investing in for decades."

"Over the past several years, we've been finding some of the most attractive valuations among quality companies in the more economically sensitive sectors. Our largest sector weightings are Industrials at about 29%, Information Technology at 25%, followed by Energy and Materials.

In the Industrials sector we own several machinery, equipment, and business services companies that dominate the particular niche that they operate in and are also well positioned to benefit from improved U.S. manufacturing activity, a rebound in commercial construction, as well as the eventual capital spending that's been postponed by companies over the past couple of years as a result of the tepid economic recovery that we've had thus far."

Top Low Price Companies For 2016

"A lot of our Industrial companies have done a great job controlling their cost structures, and as a result they're poised to have significant earnings leverage when the revenue growth does reaccelerate for them. Also, several of our Industrial companies have international exposure, so they should benefit over time from an eventual recovery in Europe as well as continued above-average economic growth in the emerging economies.

Technology is another space where we found a lot of interesting opportunities. We've actually found a lot of values in more traditional technology companies, such as semiconductor capital equipment."

"Energy services is another area where we're finding a lot of attractive valuations among companies that earn high returns from providing the key exploration, drilling, production, and processing technologies that are fueling the ongoing North American shale gas and oil revolution.

Historically, low-quality companies, defined as companies with very high levels of debt on their balance sheet and/or low returns on invested capital, have led small-cap performance in the early stages of an economic recovery. This cycle has been different in that low-quality outperformance has been much more prolonged."

"Given that economically sensitive sectors are the areas where we've been finding the most attractive valuations among quality companies over the past several years, we're optimistic about how our portfolios are positioned going forward."

Journalism: Alive and kicking, Rieder says

Slowly but surely, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar's ambitious foray into newsgathering is starting to crystallize.

Omidyar's is one of a number of intriguing nascent journalism ventures featuring star performers. But his strikes me as the most exciting, not only because of its scope and funding but also because it seems focused more on actual reporting as well as analysis and interpretation.

Last year, tech billionaire Omidyar passed on buying The Washington Post, deciding instead to invest heavily — as in $250 million heavily — in launching his own digital news outlet. His marquee get was Glenn Greenwald, the crusading journalist/ lawyer who has led the way in coverage of the Edward Snowden saga. And he hired former Rolling Stone executive editor Eric Bates to help figure out precisely what to do and how to do it.

This week Omidyar posted a video that offered a number of tantalizing hints about what he has in mind.

His baby, First Look Media, will include multiple digital publications. The flagship website, to debut later this year, will run the gamut, covering politics, business, sports and entertainment. In addition, First Look will include a "family" of digital magazines, each covering a specific topic.

REM RIEDER; Gearing up for a journalism juggernaut

While the overall goal is a strong diet of public service journalism — the impetus for Omidyar's plunge — it's his view that you need to offer a wide array of material to broaden the audience for your most important work.

Rem Rieder is a media columnist for USA TODAY.(Photo: USA TODAY)

"For me, journalism is about more than just telling stories," he says in the video. "Journalism is about telling stories that make a difference."

While the digital era has brought with it ! enormous pluses — instant access to an extraordinary amount of valuable information and journalism for starters — the collateral damage for traditional journalism has been formidable. Sharply declining ad revenue has forced newspapers to cut back deeply.

One of the cool things about what Omidyar is saying is that he sounds prepared to play big, to do things the right way.

"We'll bring back to journalism what's been lost — the critical but expensive support that's often neglected in the digital age," he says. "In our model, teams of data analysts, fact checkers, visual designers, editors and technologists will work together with writers, reporters and producers to create powerful stories presented in compelling packages."

As for how to make the thing self-sustaining — the overarching challenge for journalism today — Omidyar says he hasn't nailed that one down, but he'll get back to us.

"We don't have all of the answers," he says. "But we're really good at asking questions, and learning from our mistakes."

There was also some news this week about another promising initiative. Stats expert Nate Silver, who achieved rock star status during the 2012 presidential campaign with his dead-on analysis of polls and brought tons of traffic to nytimes.com, created a stir in July when he left the Times for a much-expanded mission at ESPN and ABC News, both owned by the Walt Disney Co.

Silver posted this week that his much-broadened FiveThirtyEight blog will focus on politics, economics, sports, science and lifestyle. He says he's hired 15 "amazing" journalists and is hiring more. Presumably they'll be amazing as well.

Silver says his site will specialize in "data journalism," which he describes as "the application of statistics and other quantitative methods toward issues in the news." But he and his amazing allies also will challenge what they consider the "irresponsible" use of data in statistics in journalism or anywhere else, for that matter.

While all th! at sounds! pretty heavy, Silver, who started out as a baseball stats guy, warns that he and his colleagues will have plenty of fun exploring everything from "baseball to burritos."

This week also marked the beginning of another journalism adventure as Ezra Klein, the brainy Wonkblog policy blogger, announced that he will be leaving The Washington Post to set up his own operation under the aegis of Vox Media.

Klein, who will be joined at his new outfit by two Post colleagues and Slate's Matt Yglesias, says the goal will be to provide critically important context for news developments. "Our mission is to create a site that's as good at explaining the world as it is at reporting on it," Klein wrote at The Verge, a tech website owned by Vox.

Klein had hoped to do something similar at the Post, with a reported eight-figure budget, but was rebuffed by the paper's leadership.

But while Klein's gambit may have been too rich for the Post's blood, the paper, now owned by another tech billionaire, Jeff Bezos, showed that the new media aren't having all the fun.

Post Executive Editor Martin Baron sent a memo to his staff Wednesday proclaiming that 2014 "will be a year of impressive investment in The Washington Post."

Baron says the paper is launching new blogs, expanding its magazine, redesigning its website and creating a new breaking news desk.

There's been no shortage of discouraging news about journalism in recent years. It's great to see exciting signs of life.

Amy Sancetta/AP Plenty of stocks go up and down in any given week. The gainers inspire us to keep investing. The decliners keep greed in check while reminding us about the risks of the equity markets. Let's go over some of last week's best and worst performers. Chiquita Brands (CQB) -- Up 35 Percent Last Week Investors went bananas over Chiquita after it received -- and rejected -- a buyout offer. Cutrale and Safra offered an unsolicited offer to buy the banana giant at a price of $13 a share, representing a 29 percent premium to where Chiquita closed before bid was made public. Chiquita's board rejected the offer. The stock still moved higher -- above and beyond $13 -- on the possibility of Cutrale and Safra sweetening their bid. Monster Beverage (MNST) -- Up 34 Percent Last Week Soft drinks are out, and adrenaline-boosting energy drinks are in. Coca-Cola (KO) knows this, so it announced on Friday morning that it was buying a nearly 17 percent stake in Monster Beverage for $2.15 billion. Monster and Red Bull dominate this niche despite growing concerns about the health risks of young consumers taking in too many energy drinks. Monster's stock rallied on Friday. Investors may be hoping that Coca-Cola eventually swallows down all of Monster, but in the meantime it validates the beverage category. United Online (UNTD) -- Up 20 Percent Last Week It's possible to be at the right place at the right time but with the wrong approach. United Online hasn't been the market darling that it could have been given its ability to hop on to trends early. After all, it acquired alum-reuniting Classmates before social networking was hot. It built up NetZero when the country was just starting to migrate online. It also bought MyPoints from a legacy airline before the appeal of online coupons and loyalty clubs became popular. However, investors were rewarded last week when United Online posted preliminary quarterly results. Its bean counters are still trying to assess th

SeaWorld Entertainment (NYSE: SEAS  ) announced this morning that SeaWorld Orlando experienced record attendance during the quarter. This comes as a welcome surprise because SeaWorld Orlando's attendance was trending lower this summer, and that was before the Blackfish documentary created a backlash of negative reactions that resulted in several bands backing out of upcoming concert appearances at the marine-life park. If SeaWorld Orlando is holding up just fine, one can only imagine how well the season went for Universal Orlando a few exits northeast on I-4.

Twitter currently trades at a Last Twelve Months (LTM) Price to Sales (PS) ratio of 27, which translates to astronomical valuations. Consider a comparison with Facebook which generates about 10 times the revenue and still grows at a healthy 60 odd percent. Facebook trades at an LTM PS multiple of 19. Here one should note that Facebook also delivered a net profit margin of 27% in Q2 vs Twitter's loss margin of 46% and has nearly 5 times Twitter's active users.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Greg Pugh] Callaway Golf Company (NYSE: ELY) has forged a reputation as a leader in golf equipment innovation. However, the company started sliding in 2008 due to recession, while the brand image fell as well. US industry golf sales hit a floor and flattened just above $1.8 billion between 2009 and 2011, but have started to rebound in the last two years.

Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) was down as well, dropping 9.70 percent to $7.54 after the Dick's Sporting goods earnings report unveiled a weakness in the golf market which traders applied to Callaway, using it as a catalyst to push the shares lower.

Spruce Point Capital Management, LLC has released a research report about small cap robotics stock iRobot Corporation (NASDAQ: IRBT) entitled About to Short Circuit, meaning investors should take a closer look at the report, thestockand the performance ofrobotics peer Adept Technology Inc (NASDAQ: ADEP) andthe Robo-Stox Global Robotics & Automation ETF (NASDAQ: ROBO). I should mention that we used to have both Adept Technology and iRobot Corporation in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfoliobecause we see therobotics subsector improving as companies aim to reduce overhead and improve efficiencies through machine to machine (M2M) automation.

Another way for investors to play the robotics industry is a new exchange traded fund, Robo-Stox Robotics & Automation (symbol: ROBO). The ETF owns a basket of robotics and automation stocks. One majo! r caution, though, is that not all the stocks in the ETF are those investors traditionally think of when it comes to robotics. The largest weighting is in 3D Systems, a maker of a 3D printer, and Faro Technologies, which makes measurement devices. But none of the stocks in the ETF account for more than 4% of the total value, so the diversification helps give investors a way to play the speculative industry.

MetLIfe: Doubling-down annuity sellers lack clarity, risk

MetLife Inc., the insurer reducing variable annuity sales by more than half, said rivals that are expanding are probably retaining less funds to back the retirement products.

“The companies that hold the lowest amount of capital against their VA business are by and large the same companies who are most aggressively selling VAs today,” Bill Wheeler, MetLife's president of the Americas region, said at a conference on Tuesday. The sales expansion is “literally a doubling-down in this industry,” he said.

MetLife, the largest U.S. life insurer, has been scaling back from variable annuities to cut risks tied to market fluctuations. The contracts can guarantee that clients' assets will increase in value even when equities fall. Prudential Plc's Jackson National, the No. 12 seller of variable annuities in 2007, is now the biggest, followed by Lincoln National Corp.

Top 10 Dividend Stocks To Watch Right Now

Rivals “clearly have a different view about their risk profile, and the risk profile of the VA business,” Mr. Wheeler said without naming firms.

Small-Caps Double Dow in Signal Economy Is Gaining Speed

The smallest stocks are rallying almost twice as fast as bigger companies in the U.S., a bullish economic signal from businesses whose profits are most dependent on domestic demand.

Shares of companies from Rite Aid Corp. to Teledyne Technologies Inc. in the Russell 2000 Index (RTY) have advanced 32 percent in 2013, compared with 19 percent for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The spread is the widest for any year since 2003, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Three of the last four times small-caps outperformed by this much, the economy grew faster the next year and stocks stayed in a bull market for another year or more.

Gains in smaller companies that are more dependent on U.S. growth show investors are betting the world's largest economy will pick up even after jobs growth slowed and the government shutdown weighed on gross domestic product. Smaller firms are surpassing analyst earnings estimates by more than Dow companies and are forecast to grow faster next year.

"If you're focused on the U.S., and the U.S. is performing very well, then of course your revenues and earnings are going to be much better," Kully Samra of Charles Schwab Corp., which has $2.15 trillion of assets globally, said by phone Oct. 24 from London. "Other regions are at different stages of dealing with structural issues, and the U.S. has already dealt with them."

The average company in the Russell 2000 gets 84 percent of its sales from the U.S. and is valued at $972 million, compared with 55 percent and $152 billion for the Dow (INDU), data compiled by Bloomberg show.

Third Gain

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index climbed 0.9 percent last week to 1,759.77, the third straight advance after a weaker-than-forecast jobs report spurred speculation the Federal Reserve will maintain stimulus. More than $2.3 billion went into exchange-traded funds that invest in U.S. equities Oct. 21 through Oct. 24. The iShares Russell 2000 ETF attracted almost $500 million, the second-most among about 500 funds, according to Bloomberg data.

Rite Aid, the third-largest U.S. drugstore chain, raised its profit forecast last month because of increasing sales at remodeled stores. The Camp Hill, Pennsylvania-based company gets 100 percent of its sales from the U.S. and has rallied 276 percent in 2013.

Teledyne Technologies (TDY), which gets 80 percent of its revenue from the U.S., raised its 2013 per-share earnings projections last week. The Thousand Oaks, California-based aerospace and defense electronics provider, up 39 percent for the year, exceeded analyst projections by 8.1 percent last quarter, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

Orbitz Rally

Orbitz Worldwide Inc. (OWW) in August projected third-quarter revenue would be higher than analysts estimated. Orbitz, which gets 72 percent of sales from the U.S., has rallied 219 percent in 2013 and beaten estimates the last two quarters. The company is scheduled to report results for the third quarter on Nov. 5.

Small-caps have outperformed since the bull market began in March 2009, climbing 226 percent, compared with 138 percent for large-caps. Furniture store Pier 1 Imports Inc. (PIR) and Dana Holding Corp., a maker of car and truck axles, led the Russell 2000, advancing more than 11,000 percent each. The biggest gainers in the Dow during the period were American Express Co. with a 676 percent gain and Walt Disney Co., which rose 344 percent.

Accelerating Rally

The advance in small companies has accelerated in the last four months, with the Russell 2000 rising 14 percent since June 30 compared with 4.4 percent in the Dow industrials. The gap is the biggest for any similar period since 1997, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

"The main driver of small-caps is the cyclicality of the market," Patrick Moonen, who helps oversee about $240 billion as senior strategist at ING Investment Management in The Hague, said by telephone. "What are the economic prospects and how are risk aversion or risk appetite evolving? Both factors were clear tailwinds for small-caps so far this year."

Smaller companies usually climb faster at the start of a bull market, making them a proxy for future economic activity. The Russell 2000 was up 71 percent in the first six months of the 2009 rally, compared with a 46 percent advance in the Dow. This year's outperformance is occurring almost five years after stocks started rallying, signaling the economic recovery will accelerate from what has been slowest rate since World War II.

Economic Projections

U.S. GDP will increase at a 2.4 percent annual pace this quarter and reach 3 percent a year from now, economist estimates compiled by Bloomberg show. This month's budget impasse will spur Fed policy makers to wait until March to scale back the $85 billion of monthly bond purchases, a Bloomberg survey showed this month.

"We have a window of three to four months where we have improving fundamentals and low or no risk of tapering," Moonen said. "We are in a sweet spot in that we don't see any major hurdles before the end of the year now that the U.S. fiscal situation is out of the way."

Russell 2000 companies are beating analyst earnings estimates by 11 percent, more than twice the rate for companies in the Dow, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Results for bigger companies fell short of projections in the second quarter, as the smaller companies surpassed forecasts. Analysts say small companies will boost profits at more than four times the pace of larger firms next year.

High Valuations

Those projections are too optimistic and valuations will get too high as brokers lower their profit predictions, according to Steven DeSanctis, Bank of America Corp.'s strategist for small-cap equities in New York. The Russell 2000's price-earnings ratio increased 52 percent this year to 27.5 times estimated operating earnings, compared with 14.7 for the Dow, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

"It seems a little too optimistic," Desanctis said by phone. He predicts the Russell 2000 of smaller companies will end this year at 1,100, or 1.6 percent lower than the close on Oct. 25. "At the start of the year, valuations were attractive. Not so much today."

Earnings and economic reports don't justify small-cap prices and shares of larger companies won't necessarily follow the Russell 2000, according to Lawrence Creatura, a Rochester, New York-based fund manager at Federated Investors Inc., which oversees about $364 billion.

"The arrows are not pointing in the direction that suggests that large-cap stocks have to follow their small-cap brethren," he said by phone on Oct. 23. "Based on the earnings that we have so far, it appears that economic growth is not as robust as what we hoped for at the beginning of the year."

Past Indicator

Small-cap gains of this size have proven prescient in the past. They preceded faster economic growth and a broader stock market advance in 2003 and 1991, and coincided with them in 1979. The Russell 2000's outperformance in 2003 was at the start of the last equity bull market, when the S&P 500 more than doubled from October 2002 through October 2007. GDP expanded at the fastest rate in four years in 2004.

In 1991, small-caps were up 36 percent through Oct. 25, more than twice larger stocks, at the start of the largest bull market on record. The S&P 500 gained more than 300 percent from 1990 through 1998 and the economy grew at an average of 3.5 percent per year throughout the decade.

"Historically the trend has been for the small-caps to hand the baton off to the large-caps," Donald Selkin, who helps manage about $3 billion as the New York-based chief market strategist at National Securities Corp.

Business Confidence

While confidence among U.S. small businesses slipped in September, it has hovered near a one-year high the last five months. The National Federation of Independent Business's optimism index rose to 94.4 in May, the highest in a year, from 88 in December, according to data based on a survey of more than 770 small-business owners. The number of firms projecting sales will increase and saying it's a good time to expand rose from August.

Analysts predict earnings at International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), which gets more than half its sales from abroad, will climb 10 percent this year, the slowest since 2004. Shares have slumped 7.7 percent in 2013. Caterpillar Inc., where more than 60 percent of sales is from overseas, cut its 2013 revenue forecast last week. The biggest maker of construction and mining equipment is down 5.4 percent in 2013.

"If you think the U.S. is recovering, then small-caps tend to be more domestically oriented than large-caps," Frances Hudson, an Edinburgh-based strategist at Standard Life Investments Ltd., which oversees about $278 billion, said by phone. "Small-caps are more growth-oriented."

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Who knew that consolidation speculation in the beer industry could be sung to the tune of the Butthole Surfers’ “Pepper.” SABMiller (SBMRY) wants to buy Heineken (HEINY). Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) might want to buy SABMiller. And Molson Coors Brewing (TAP) might scoop up the leftovers.

  • [By Alyce Lomax]

Still, it's a sticky area. When you think of volume and sales growth some of the best, most "loyal" customers for companies like Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) , Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM  ) , Anheuser-Busch (NYSE: BUD  ) , and Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF-B  ) are going to be some of their most addicted and most troubled ones. If enough people curbed their intake -- obviously an important part of many people getting well -- the industry would have a real problem to contend with. Like tobacco, a whole lot of quitters shrinks the market.

  • [By sandyinvestment]

As the craft beer industry has a considerable measure of room to develop, Boston Beer confronts rivalry from Molson Coors Brewing (TAP) and Constellation Brands (STZ) (STZ.B). Each of the three organizations have had great runs on the Street, however Boston Beer and Constellation Brands have been the greatest outperformers. We should investigate each of them.

Hot Shipping Companies To Own For 2016: iShares J.P. Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF (EMB)

iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond Fund (the Fund) is a non-diversified fund. The investment objective of the Fund is to provide investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of a specified benchmark index (the Underlying Index) representing a segment of emerging countries bond markets. The Fund seeks to achieve its objective by investing primarily in fixed-income securities that comprise the Underlying Index. The Fund operates as an index fund and will not be actively managed. The adverse performance of a security in the Fund portfolio will ordinarily not result in the elimination of the security from the Fund portfolio. The Fund is managed by Barclays Global Fund Advisors (BGFA), a subsidiary of iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond Fund (BGI).

The Fund generally will invest at least 90% if its assets in the securities of its Underlying Index. However, the Fund may at times invest up to 20% of its assets in certain futures, options and swap contracts, cash and cash equivalents, including money market funds advised by BGFA, as well as in high-yield corporate bonds not included in its Underlying Index. iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond Fund invests a substantial portion of its assets in the United States-denominated bonds issued by sovereign and quasi-sovereign entities of emerging market countries. The Fund may invest in short-term instruments, including money market instruments, on an ongoing basis to provide liquidity or for other reasons.

Finally, beyond the Dow, the real damage is happening not in stocks but in other markets, especially bonds. PIMCO Total Return ETF (NYSEMKT: BOND  ) is down 1.3%, proving to investors seeking safety that bond investments are far from a secure place to put your money these days. Emerging-market bond investments are taking even more damage, with iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond (NYSEMKT: EMB  ) plunging 3.5%. When investors try to reduce their risk, the first place they look is in the more aggressive areas where they've put their money. The exodus from emerging markets in both stocks and bonds shows the fear that's rising among U.S. investors -- but that fear is motivated less by the prospects in those countries than by investors' desire to preserve hard-won profits dating back to 2009.

Getty Images/Cultura As more than a few finance industry professionals will happily brag, 2013 was a banner year for initial public offerings with 156 new stocks coming to market -- the most since 2007 -- collectively reaping the issuers aggregate proceeds of more than $38 billion. We went over the most recognizable members of this year's rookie class in "The 5 Most Unfortgettable IPOs of 2013." But in a big pool of 156 companies, there are bound to be at least a few struggling fish. Here, then, is a selection of five from the class of 2013 that are getting seriously lapped by their peers. 1. Prosensa (RNA) This Dutch clinical-stage biopharmaceutical firm had a strong debut when it listed on the Nasdaq in late June. The stock's offer price of $13 zoomed to close at over $19 on the first day of trading. But bad news was waiting around the corner; less than three months later, the shares tanked by more than 70 percent after the company announced that the muscular dystrophy treatment (drisapersen) it was developing in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline (GLAXF), did not hit its primary endpoint in late-stage trials. That one-day free fall saw the stock swoon from $24 per share to barely over $7. Since then, shares have slipped even further, and can currently be had for less than $5. 2. Violin Memory (VMEM) As a provider of high-speed data storage solutions, this company should be well in tune with current IT needs. But it fell flat from the beginning -- on its first day of trading the stock closed slightly over $7 a share, after pricing at $9. Worse was to come when the firm reported its first quarterly results as a publicly traded entity. While revenue advanced nearly 40 percent on a year-over-year basis, that couldn't cover the gaping hole of a bottom line loss totaling $34 million (a figure, by the way, significantly higher than the top line number of $28 million). The already-sinking shares continued to dive, bottoming at just over $2.50 per share. The re
