For example, his Special Opportunity Fund (SPE) needed more capital to effectively implement its activist strategy after he took over. Unfortunately, most of the ways to raise capital are expensive and seriously dilute shareholder value. For example, a common stock offering, the most common way a closed end fund would raise capital, has to be priced at a discount and an investment bank needs to be paid to organize and sell it. Obviously, paying to issue shares at a discount is a disaster for long term shareholder value, so he instead pursued a rights offering for convertible preferred stock, which allowed the company to raise money without the expense of an investment bank while allowing shareholders the opportunity to increase their holdings in the fund without paying a commission. Advisors' Opinion:

Another example is real estate, where self-directed IRAs let you choose specific properties. While you could buy a mortgage REIT like Annaly Capital (NYSE: NLY  ) to give you more diversified exposure to the real estate market, the only way to put a particularly attractive piece of real estate into an IRA is through a self-directed option.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

The recent gyrations in the mortgage REIT sector have knocked down even big players like Annaly Capital (NYSE: NLY  ) and American Capital Mortgage (NASDAQ: AGNC  ) , leaving them bruised and battered as investors flee the once-lucrative trusts for something a little less volatile. Annaly has just been downgraded to Underperform by Sterne Agee, and American Capital Mortgage's Gary Kain was forced to admit that his agency-only trust will experience another drop in book valuefor the second quarter, after saying earlier that book value was rebounding.

  • [By Charles Sizemore]

Mortgage REITS are also getting hammered: Annaly Capital Management (NLY), one of the largest and most liquid mREITS, is close to touching a new 52-week low and now trades at a 21% discount to its book value.

  • [By Markos Kaminis]

Annaly Capital (NLY) share performance is likely to be sensitive to intensifying concern about the debt ceiling over the next few weeks. As the debt ceiling issue is used and abused for political ploy and purpose, I expect the stock market and most other asset classes, save gold, should see downside pressure. Among stocks, some are at higher risk than others, and Annaly is among those most sensitive because of its sensitivity to interest rates. So, despite the shares' softness since summer, they face further pressure near-term. However, if the debt ceiling issue is not blown by legislators in the end, then I would use the weakness as opportunity to acquire NLY on the cheap, because I favor the shares otherwise.
